Website Design Tips

Below are a list of common problems with websites. This is often also why the conversion rates can be throttled, which we try to overcome for more successful AdWords Management.

Me, me, me!

Businesses are often keen to prove themselves, so spend too much time talking about themselves and not enough time focussing on their customers needs. Visitors to a website might not be interested in just reading about your achievements and history etc, they want to know what you can do for them.

Too much flash, not enough content

Clever flashy gimmicks may be fun, but at the end of the day they often cause a high bounce-rate (people clicking away) because they’re distracting. People want information – as efficiently as possible.

Not credible enough

There’s really no excuse for an amateur looking site these days – unless its just a hobby site thats for a small group of people. Finding bugs, broken links, poor navigation, or inconsistencies in the design of sites is frustrating for potential customers – and will certainly lose business.

Imitating the competition

Its natural to want to ‘look good’ to the competition, as if they are going to be ‘checking you out’. But really, its not the competition you should be impressing – its your customers. It might be that the competition are all doing the same thing – so you could use a fresh approach to stand out.

Poor copywriting

Copywriting is an artform – and massively underestimated by the majority of business owners. Writing persuasive, compelling sales copy that ticks all the boxes from a commercial point of view is something that some businesses invest £thousands in to get right.

Website Common Mistakes

As a website designer, its important that I take into account your wants and needs within the wider context of your business. Fortunately for you, I’m also a Qualified Google AdWords Professional so can advise on your online marketing alongside building your site. Once again… the best of both worlds!

The success of your site depends on many variables. Below are some important areas to think about.

Getting Traffic

Search engines use complex processes to decide where your site should rank for any given keyword or key phrase. Frequently, this is something people only start thinking about after the website is built! If necessary, I can discuss with you your chances of getting listed on search engines, based on real-world supply and demand figures for your business area. This could then feed back into the development of the site.

Stand Above the Competition

If you’re being undermined by cheaper prices on other sites for the same product or service, then you’re in trouble. In the nervous economy, shoppers are comparison shopping more than ever. Its time to diversify, or explore unique selling points which your customers will find irresistable. I can help you come up with a unique selling point to lift your site.

Your Content

Your content should not be boring – but readable, compelling, and encouraging action. Customers should be able to easily navigate to find what they are looking for – something I always achieve when building sites.

The Customer Process

Is it clear what a customer should do next? Some customers won’t like using the phone, so its essential to have other means of easily contacting you. If they do phone, is the person who answers the phone going to sound credible, professional, and friendly? Its amazing how many people answer the phone in shockingly unprofessional ways! I had a client with a great site, lots of great enquiries, but very poor conversions because his telephone manner was so awful! Poor receptionists are also common – each step in the customer chain is going to lose you customers, so it must be as water-tight as possible. I can offer advice in this area.

Your Personal Mindset and Attitudes

A positive mindset is essential for recognising and using opportunities, and attracting good ideas. Are you watching your customers or watching the pennies? Its very difficult working for people who are overly cautious about spending – saving money is no way to make money! It’s essential to have confidence in your business – and being that you are interested in a new site, you’re already there!
